Installing Methodox Office

Methodox Office 0.4 comes as one folder holding all six applications and mos, and on Windows as an installer that puts that folder in place for you. Nothing else needs to be installed first: the folder carries its own .NET runtime.

The Windows installer

Run MethodoxOffice_v<version>_win-x64_Setup.exe (the Compute edition's is MethodoxOffice_Compute_v<version>_win-x64_Setup.exe). It asks:

  • For whom to install. Just for you (the default) installs into %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Methodox Office and needs no administrator rights. For everyone on the computer installs into Program Files and asks Windows for permission when you choose it.
  • Where. Any folder you like.
  • What else to set up, each optional: Start menu shortcuts (on), desktop shortcuts (off), adding mos to PATH so a command prompt finds it (off), and making Methodox Office the default application for each application's file types, chosen per application (off).

Whatever you choose about defaults, every application is registered for its file types, so it appears under Open with and in Settings ▸ Apps ▸ Default apps. Windows itself asks before it changes the application of a type you had already chosen one for.

A newer installer upgrades an older installation in place. Methodox Office appears in Settings ▸ Apps with an uninstaller, which removes the folder, the shortcuts, the PATH entry, and each file-type default only where it still points at Methodox Office.

For scripted deployment the installer runs silently:

MethodoxOffice_v0.4.0_win-x64_Setup.exe /VERYSILENT /CURRENTUSER /DIR="D:\Apps\Methodox Office" /TASKS="startmenu,path,assoc\formula"
"D:\Apps\Methodox Office\unins000.exe" /VERYSILENT

/ALLUSERS installs for everyone instead of /CURRENTUSER.

The portable folder

The same folder is also published as a zip, MethodoxOffice_v<version>_<platform>_B<date>.zip. Unzip it anywhere and run the applications from it; nothing is written outside the folder except your settings, your recent documents and the recovery copies (see Recovery).

File What it is
MethodoxOffice.exe Methodox Office, the Start Centre
MethodoxImpulse.exe Methodox Impulse, documents
MethodoxFormula.exe Methodox Formula, spreadsheets
MethodoxExpo.exe Methodox Expo, presentations
MethodoxNu.exe Methodox Nu, drawings and diagrams
MethodoxOfficeMath.exe Methodox Office Math, equations
mos.exe The command line of the whole suite
Examples\ Example documents for each application, and automation samples, with a README.txt
Dictionaries\, AutoCorrect\ English spelling dictionaries and AutoCorrect lists, under their own licences

Every example in Examples\ was made by Methodox Office's own engines when the folder was built, so it shows what the applications can do today. Open one, change anything, and close it without saving; the next build writes them again.

The zip is built for Windows on x64. The build can also produce folders for Windows on ARM, macOS on Apple silicon and Linux on x64, without an installer.

The first start

Start Methodox Office from the Start menu (or MethodoxOffice.exe) to see every application and your recent documents in one window, or start an application directly. Each application opens with a new empty document, or with the document you opened it with.

The applications open a window and nothing else, with no console window beside it. Their command lines still work from a script or a prompt, and mos is the one to use there.
